New Nicotine Pouch Brands Rush to Fill Market Gap
Many emerging nicotine pouch brands, especially from China, are rapidly entering the market, seeking to fill the gap created by oversupply and legal issues surrounding Philip Morris International’s (PMI) Zyn brand.
PMI Faces Oversupply and Legal Pressure
According to a recent Bloomberg report, Philip Morris is under dual pressure from oversupply and subpoenas that have resulted in the suspension of Zyn’s online sales in the U.S.. As a result, numerous competitors have entered the nicotine pouch market, aiming to capture market share from the struggling brand.
Distributors Seize Opportunity Amid Zyn’s Setbacks
Jo, sales manager for Apex—California wholesaler SongDistribution—said at the Alternative Products Expo in Houston last month:
- “Since Zyn is currently experiencing declining sales and manufacturing problems, we want to ride the wave.”
At the event, he showcased a nicotine pouch brand endorsed by former basketball star Dennis Rodman.
U.S. Nicotine Pouch Market Poised for Explosive Growth
The U.S. nicotine pouch market reached $6 billion in 2023 and is projected to grow to $18 billion by 2027, according to Euromonitor International. The firm reported that Zyn’s sales grew 80% in the first quarter before PMI’s supply and legal issues intensified.
However, the situation worsened when PMI suspended nationwide online sales following a subpoena from the District of Columbia, creating an opening for new entrants.
Chinese Manufacturers Flood the Market
With Zyn’s temporary retreat, many new nicotine pouch brands—particularly from China—have flooded the market to fill the void.
These companies are adopting similar strategies to those used in the vape industry to gain rapid market share.
Big Tobacco companies, already struggling with the influx of flavored disposable vapes from China, are now turning their attention to competition in the nicotine pouch segment.
Industry Leaders Warn of Illicit Market Growth
Steven Callahan, executive director at Altria Group Inc., observed:
- “You’ll notice a growth in illicit vape devices and a growth in nicotine pouches.”
A PMI spokesperson declined to comment on Zyn’s competition or patent protections.
Meanwhile, Chris Howard, executive vice president of Swisher International, said the FDA’s slow product authorization process has led to a surge in illegal e-cigarette sales and expressed concern that nicotine pouches could face a similar fate.
Chinese Brands Launch Aggressively in the U.S.
William Chaw, project manager at Granch Biopack, a Chinese manufacturer of cigarette materials, said his company produces nicotine pouches under the “L Vape” brand and plans to launch them quickly in the U.S.
Other Chinese brands entering the market include “Zombie Nic” and “Pure Zyn”, aiming to capitalize on the growing consumer demand and PMI’s temporary absence from online sales channels.
