Lawmakers in the US state of Washington are considering a bill that would ban the sale and advertising of flavored tobacco products such as vapes and menthol cigarettes from 2026. The bill aims to protect teenagers from the threat of nicotine addiction. Still, the vape industry argues that a ban could increase the use of traditional cigarettes and cause a public health disaster. The bill is now in committee hearings.
According to fox13seattle reported on January 22. Washington state lawmakers are considering a bill to ban the sale and promotion of flavored tobacco products such as electronic cigarettes and menthol cigarettes from 2026, and the proposal of the bill has triggered a fierce debate between public health supporters and the electronic cigarette industry.
State Rep. Christine Reeves (D-Federal Way), the bill’s lead sponsor, said the ban is aimed at protecting teens from the threat of nicotine addiction. She noted that fruit-flavored or candy-flavored vapes are often used to appeal to young people, and a ban would help eliminate the market circulation of these products.
However, Tony Abboud, executive director of the vaping advocacy group Vapor Technology Association, argued that vapes are a less harmful alternative to cigarettes and that a ban could lead to increased use of traditional cigarettes and even trigger a public health disaster.
According to 2024 data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, youth tobacco use has fallen to its lowest level in 25 years, but fruit – or candy-flavored vapes are still being used to appeal to young people. The bill also states that any product approved by the Federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) can continue to be sold.
The bill is now in the committee hearing stage, where lawmakers and the public are discussing the feasibility and impact of its implementation.
