When you inhale a vape, you breathe in an aerosol created by heating the liquid and then exhale a cloud of vapor. It’s safer than smoking because it’s free of tar, formaldehyde, carbon monoxide, and many other harmful ingredients found in tobacco. The liquid you vape is called vape oil or e-liquid. Let’s discuss the main ingredients and how vape oil works.
What’s in your vape liquid?

There are four main ingredients in vape liquids. -PG (Propylene Glycol), VG (Vegetable Glycerin), Flavors and Smoke Tar (optional). When you inhale air, the battery on the vape heats up the coil and turns it red. This heat is transferred to the soaked wick, evaporating the vape into a vapor or aerosol. You can inhale this, hold it for a few seconds, then exhale the smoke and enjoy your pleasure.
Because vapes evaporate rather than burn, they don’t turn to ash, which means they don’t release the toxic byproducts commonly found in tobacco, pipes, cigars, or regular cigarettes. But if you want to safely simulate the smoking experience, you can still purchase tobacco-flavored vapes with strong throat irritants. Some vape users choose TFN or smokeless tar.
It is a lab-produced artificial smoking tar. These are produced by scientists, such as the vitamin’s reaction B3 nicotinic acid ethyl ester (aka niacin.) TFN can be packaged as salt nicotine tar or free base. (More on this later.). It lacks some of the naturally occurring toxic compounds found in plants containing nicotine tar. Let’s take a closer look at individual vape ingredients.
Vape Liquid Ingredients
1. Propylene Glycol (PG)
Some people think vapes are toxic because the names of vape ingredients sound scary. However many of the compounds come from natural sources. If you take some time to examine them, you’ll find they’re much more harmless. alpha-violet ketone will make food smell like fruit or cherries. Dihydrogen monoxide (DHMO) is just a substitute for water.
PG falls into this category. It is made from processed ethanol sugar. It produces a small amount of “smoke” or vapor when heated, but not as much as VG. The smoke is small because PG is rarer than VG. For reference, PG is sometimes used to create stage smoke during live performances. Another method is to use a CO2 vape to release dry ice.
What does a PG vape do?
When you heat e-liquid, thinner PG atomizes faster and produces lighter smoke than VG. It’s slightly thicker than water but dissolves substances faster, so it’s a great solvent. That’s why PG is used as an ingredient in vapes to keep the smoke tar and flavor. You may see. PG is listed as trimethylglycol or dihydroxypropane.
In addition to vape oils, PG is also used as an antibacterial moisturizer in beauty products. As a highly effective emulsion breaker, it helps to fully mix all the particles, oils, and liquids that are then made into vape oil. The higher the PG content, the stronger the flavor and the more throat irritation. Some people like the feeling of going back to the smoking days, so they choose to go higher. PG vape oil has a high content.
2. Vegetable Glycerin (VG)
For smoke chasers, VG (sometimes spelled without the last “e”) is the most important ingredient. That’s why you exhale with tons of smoke. While it may seem exaggerated, it disappears completely within a few seconds. Other options include water-based glycerin, which is professionally pre-mixed with distilled water. (Don’t try this at home!)
First, let’s learn the basics. Glycerin is a brand name, just like glycerin. But Vaseline is glycerin, and glycerin is the generic name for glycerin. Glycerin contains at least 95% glycerin. Digging deeper, vegetable glycerin comes from plants, with palm, coconut, or soy being the most popular sources. But regular glycerin comes from animal fats or petroleum.
Glycerin is categorized as a natural ingredient because it is a byproduct of soap. When vegetable fats are pressed and boiled with lye or a similar base, the oil and water molecules in the mixture combine to form VG, which, like PG, is used as a moisturizer in beauty products. It is mainly used as an allergenic substitute for PG and is not a good solvent because its density interferes with diffusion.
The Importance of VG in vape Liquids
Because VGs are sticky, they require heavier wicks and wider coils. Sometimes they use mesh coils. But VG is a postmodern additive to vape oils. Early vapes relied on PG, as did many disposable pen vapes. Because of this, they don’t produce the satisfying soot that sub-ohm vape devices and custom modules do.VG also provides a smooth, silky inhale.
The two main functions of VG in vape liquids are to produce a large amount of smoke and to soften the throat irritation of smoke tar vapes. But because the smoke tar itself is infused with PG, the nicotine content is 0% The flavoring of a vape may be made from VG along with a flavoring agent that does not contain the other two ingredients. In terms of throat irritation (pain while smoking), any vape with more than 60% VG will soften the throat irritation.
Like PG, VG is a sugar alcohol with no discernible color or odor. But unlike PG, it tastes a little sweet. It’s sweeter than it is. PG is thicker and denser, so it takes more heat to burn. Therefore, sub-ohm vapes are best suited for use. VG One of the reasons why sub-ohm vape oils are higher. Usually, VG and/or PG is the key. Next, you can add flavorings and/or smoke tar to improve the formula, and then, the vape oil is done!
3. Food-grade flavoring concentrates
The flavors used in vape liquids are specifically intended for vapes and similar products. You can’t swap them with food flavors or hookah flavors because the effects will not be the same. Some are single flavorings, such as menthol or bubble gum. Others are combinations of various ingredients, such as raspberry for blueberry pomegranate. Mixing these spices takes training.
However, even “simple” flavors such as vanilla or bubblegum need to be mixed with various compounds to get their unique taste and flavor. Pumpkin spice, for example, may taste like pumpkin pie but is made primarily from nutmeg, ginger, cloves, cinnamon, and (extremely rare) pumpkin puree. Similarly, bubble gum contains banana, wintergreen, cloves, cinnamon, and pineapple.
Vape flavor concentrates utilize a combination of artificial flavors, extracts, and preservatives to obtain the desired combination. Examples include camphorol sturgeonene from citrus or lavender, tabanone for cigarette flavor, and trimethylpyrazine for coffee, baked goods, chocolate, and nutty soil flavors. They may also contain oils from seeds and flowers.
Finding Flavor Ideas for Vapes
Another tip is to find vapes with detailed ingredient lists and Google them for some strange ingredients. For example, acetylpyrazine enhances the flavor of tobacco, and beta-damascenone gives roses their distinctive aroma. Studying the chemical combinations in these flavor breakdowns can provide you with inspiration for homemade vape recipes and cocktails.
You can try them out for yourself, or you can find the names of the flavors and know which ones work better. But don’t use essential oils in vapes – they’re not compatible with the internal mechanisms of vapes. Instead, go for customized flavor concentrates with proper pre-infused lipids. These flavors are usually mixed with alcohol and sweetened with maltol.
If you want to prepare a batch of vapes at home, you can buy flavor concentrates from a vape store. You can also buy vapes mixed in cocktails. Or buy several types of vapes and mix them yourself and do a little. DIY. it may produce a unique flavor that becomes your representative flavor. In case you want to add some PG and VG, choose the vape calculator.
4. Optional smoke tar
In the wild, you can find smoke tar in plants like cigarettes, potatoes, tomatoes, and even eggplant! For vapes, this smoke tar is extracted from plants with high levels of it, such as cigarettes. It is then processed to make it purer and more concentrated. Generally, there are two forms – nicotine salts and free base tar. Smoke chasers prefer free base tar because it smokes more.
But at high concentrations, free-base smoking tar can be very irritating. That’s why free-base smoking tar tastes better at lower concentrations. On the contrary, nicotine salt has a slightly less distinct flavor than free base. It also produces less smoke. But nicotine salts provide a gentler throat irritation at all concentrations, making them a favorite among people who demand the most from their smoking tar.
In nature, nicotine tar is found in plants in the form of salts (unrelated to salt). Freebase nicotine tar is made by dissolving nicotine in ammonia, filtering the slurry, and then volatilizing the base. This concentrated free base is better pH-worthy and binds better. Instead, citric acid or benzoic acid is added to the nicotine salt, which enters the bloodstream faster than the free base.
MTL, DTL, and Power
In terms of usage, nicotine salts are especially good for smoke bombs and low-power devices. You’ll probably choose MTL (mouth-to-lung) which means that you first inhale the aerosol into your mouth and then push the aerosol back into your lungs. Therefore, extra gas is inhaled through a pout or clenched teeth. Or, you can inhale a couple of times before exhaling to draw back any smoke that escaped.
For free base smoking tar, you can do this at higher wattages. MTL and DTL. The latter – direct to the lungs – is when you stretch your diaphragm and take a deep breath to send the vapor directly to your lungs. In Europe, the maximum legal level of smoke tar is 2% or 20 mg/mL, but in the U.S. and elsewhere, nicotine salts can be up to 5% or 50 mg/mL.
Usually premixed to produce nicotine tar injections. 100% PG or 50/50 injections that are half VG and half PG. consider the preloaded base when using the calculator when vaping. 20 mg/mL or 2% is the equivalent of one packet of tobacco per day. In addition, free-base cigarette tar is absorbed slowly and stays in the bloodstream longer, but oxidizes more quickly during storage and therefore deteriorates faster.
What is made from vape liquid?
Vegetable Glycerin is the four ingredients (VG), Propylene Glycol (PG), vape flavoring, and sometimes smoke tar, used to make vape fluids. Other vape oil ingredients include marijuana extracts, but that’s a separate category that we’ll discuss in another article with special tips.
Sometimes e-liquids may contain trace elements and preservatives, with VG, PG, flavorings, and smoke tar making up the largest percentage. Free alkali smoke tar is more alkaline, so it’s irritating at high concentrations and feels like smoke in the throat. Even though the concentration of nicotine salts is 5% while remaining soft.
