Sales of Juicity Vapor, a border retailer, surged threefold as consumers headed to neighboring Wyoming to buy flavored vapes after Utah’s ban went into effect.
Key points:
- Utah ban implemented: Utah’s flavored vape ban officially took effect, prompting consumers to buy products across state lines.
- Wyoming store sales SURGE: Consumers in Utah traveled to Wyoming to buy flavored vapes, leading to an increase in sales at a retail store across the border.
- Changes in consumer behavior: Affected by the ban, Utah customers are choosing to shop across state lines, tending to stock up on products to avoid frequent interstate purchases.
- Impact on Utah local retailers: While Wyoming retailers benefit, Utah local retailers may face operating pressures and challenges.
Utah’s ban on flavored vapes spurs wave of “interstate consumption”
According to ABC4 reported on April 14, as the ban on flavored electronic cigarette products in Utah officially took effect, some consumers chose to go to neighboring states to buy flavored products to meet their personal use needs.
In Evanston, Wyoming, just a few kilometers from the Utah border, a local vape retail store called “Juicity Vapor” recently welcomed a large number of customers from Utah.
According to the media investigation, in just 10 minutes on Monday (14) afternoon. The store received a number of customers from all over Utah. These consumers said that due to the closure of their usual stores, they can only purchase flavored nicotine products across state lines, and tend to purchase large quantities at once to reduce the frequency of round-trip.
Sales triple at a Wyoming retail store
Austin Carrico, manager of Juicity Vapor stores, noted that sales at his stores have spiked since the Utah ban landed.
- “Our sales have increased at least threefold, everything is changing so fast. The morning after the bill went into effect, there were about ten cars parked outside my door, rushing in as soon as we opened at nine o ‘clock.”
Carrico said daily ridership continues to climb and is no longer limited to weekend rush hours.
- “It’s the same almost every day, and the flow of passengers has never stopped.”
To cope with the surge in demand, the store has added staff and plans to add cash register equipment. Although the new customers have brought improved performance to its stores, the head of the store has expressed concern about the situation of local retailers in Utah, believing that some merchants may have difficulties in survival due to the ban.
Utah Governor Spencer Cox signed a bill in March 2024 banning the sale of flavored vape products in Utah. Although the bill has been suspended since its release due to several controversies, the restrictions on flavored vapes are still in effect from January 1, 2025.
