UK retailer VPZ slams government for “double standards”

UK vaping retailer VPZ accuses the government of contradictory vaping policies. On one hand, Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner was photographed using a vape as a smoking alternative; on the other, the Labour Party is pushing for stricter restrictions on vaping flavors, packaging, and marketing. VPZ warns these measures could backfire, hindering adults’ smoking cessation efforts and fueling black market growth.

Key Points

  • Controversy Trigger: Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner was photographed using a vape, sparking debate over government policy inconsistencies.
  • Labour Proposal: Plans to restrict vape flavors, packaging, and marketing to address youth usage concerns.
  • VPZ Position: Supports reasonable regulation and youth protection but opposes “overly restrictive” measures.
  • Risk Warning: Strict policies may force adults back to traditional cigarettes, harm legitimate businesses, and fuel black market growth.
  • Industry Impact: The UK vape sector creates thousands of jobs and reduces the NHS burden from smoking-related illnesses.

August 27, 2025 — According to Talking Retail, UK vape retailer VPZ publicly criticized the government’s “double standards” on vape policy this week. This followed media exposure of Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner using a vape, while the government simultaneously advances stricter restrictions on the industry.

VPZ stated that photos published by The Sun highlighted the contradiction in government policy: “We support Angela Rayner’s personal choice to use vapes as a smoking alternative. Yet Labour’s proposals threaten to deprive millions of British adults of this vital tool to quit smoking.”

The Labour Party’s proposed regulatory plan includes new restrictions on vape flavors, packaging, and marketing. While these measures aim to prevent youth use, VPZ contends they risk unintended consequences that could hinder UK progress in reducing smoking rates.

VPZ warned that excessive regulation could make vapes unattractive or inaccessible to adults, forcing more people back to traditional cigarettes. “This would be the very outcome the government seeks to avoid.”

As one of the UK’s largest specialist vape retailers, VPZ reaffirmed its stance: supporting reasonable regulation, including increased penalties for underage sales, rigorous enforcement, and a licensing system for specialist retail outlets, but firmly opposing “blanket bans” that could destroy harm reduction progress.

VPZ further emphasized that the UK vaping industry not only sustains thousands of jobs in retail and manufacturing but also plays a vital role in reducing the burden of smoking-related illnesses on the National Health Service (NHS).

VPZ Operations Director Jamie Strachan stated: “The Deputy Prime Minister’s use of vapes clearly highlights contradictions within the government’s stance. Senior officials can use vapes to reduce harm, yet Labour’s proposals could deprive millions of adults of their choice to quit smoking.”

He added: “If vapes are good enough for Angela Rayner in their current form, they are equally suitable for millions of adults seeking to break free from cigarettes. Restricting flavors, packaging, and supply channels does little to address youth issues while punishing adults, undermining legitimate businesses, and fueling the black market.”

VPZ urges the government to adopt an evidence-based, balanced regulatory approach that protects youth while ensuring adults continue to access safe, compliant vape products to help them quit cigarettes for good.
