UK Parliament Launches Cross-Party Vape Inquiry
Members of Parliament have formed a cross-party vape group to conduct a two-month inquiry into the UK vape industry. The investigation will examine the public health, environmental, and economic impacts of vaping, as well as review government legislative measures. Findings from the inquiry will contribute to the Tobacco and Vape Bill with specific legislative recommendations.
Formation of the All-Party Vape Group (APPG)
According to Talking Retail, Members of Parliament from across the political spectrum have come together to establish an All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Vaping. The group aims to maintain active discussion within Parliament on vaping-related issues and has officially launched its new inquiry into the efficacy and regulation of vapes in the UK.
Focus Areas of the Two-Month Investigation
The inquiry will run over the next two months and gather evidence and expert opinions from various sectors. The panel will evaluate the industry’s responsibilities and consider topics such as:
-
Public health benefits of vaping,
-
Environmental and economic impacts, and
-
Government proposals on flavors, packaging, retail display rules, taxation, and bans on certain vape products.
Objectives and Legislative Context
The investigation will culminate in a comprehensive report with a thematic analysis of the government’s proposed vaping measures. Key issues under review include the planned vape tax (effective 2026), potential flavor restrictions, and the ban on disposable vapes.
The final report will aim to provide practical and legislative recommendations to support responsible regulation and innovation within the vaping sector.
Statements from the APPG Chair, Mary Glindon
APPG Chair Mary Glindon expressed her support for the re-establishment of the cross-party group, emphasizing its significance in shaping fair vaping policy:
- “The all-party vape group has been a focal point for the issue of vapes in Parliament, and I am delighted to see this group re-established with cross-party support.”
She further encouraged broad participation in the inquiry:
- “I encourage everyone with an interest in vapes to respond to the APPG’s call for evidence on the functionality of vapes and proposed government regulations.”
Glindon also highlighted the importance of collaboration between policymakers, experts, and industry stakeholders:
- “We urge the government to work closely with the APPG over the coming months to ensure that policy is fair, balanced, and does not jeopardize the many benefits that vapes bring. I look forward to seeing the inquiry’s findings and legislative recommendations ahead of the upcoming Tobacco and Vape Bill.”
