UK Nicotine Pouch Market Nearly Doubles as More Vape Users Switch
The nicotine pouch market in the UK is experiencing rapid growth, with new research showing that the sector nearly doubled in size in 2024.
According to research from Haypp, the UK nicotine pouch market grew by approximately 95%, while a growing number of users reported switching from vapes to nicotine pouches.
The trend has been linked to several factors, including the disposable vape ban, changing public attitudes toward nicotine products, and consumer preferences for more discreet alternatives.
Key Points of UK Nicotine Pouch Market Growth
- The UK nicotine pouch market grew by approximately 95% in 2024.
- Around 32% of nicotine pouch users previously used vapes.
- 57% of users started nicotine pouches to quit smoking.
- Product concealment, perceived health advantages, and social acceptance are key growth factors.
- Most nicotine pouch users are adults, with the average age of first use at 33.
Disposable Vape Ban Accelerates Nicotine Pouch Growth
According to Talking Retail on June 23, nicotine pouches are becoming increasingly popular among UK consumers.
The growth of the category has accelerated alongside stricter vape regulations, particularly the ban on disposable vapes.
Haypp’s research shows that the UK nicotine pouch market almost doubled in 2024, recording growth of at least 95%.
As disposable vape restrictions reshape the nicotine market, some consumers appear to be exploring alternative nicotine products.
One-Third of Nicotine Pouch Users Previously Used Vapes
The survey found that nicotine pouches are attracting consumers from other nicotine categories.
Among Haypp users:
- 32% previously used vapes;
- This increased from 28% in 2023.
The data suggests that nicotine pouches are becoming an alternative option for some former vape users, particularly as regulations on disposable vaping products become stricter.
Among respondents:
- 57% said they started using nicotine pouches to quit smoking;
- 27% said they used nicotine pouches as a transition from other nicotine products, mainly vapes.
Discretion and Social Acceptance Drive Consumer Interest
The survey identified several reasons why consumers choose nicotine pouches over other nicotine products.
Users highlighted the following advantages:
- 68% valued the product’s discreet nature;
- 64% considered nicotine pouches a healthier-feeling option;
- 54% said the products do not affect people around them.
Social acceptance also appears to be an important factor.
Among surveyed users:
- 78% considered nicotine pouches socially acceptable;
- Only 30% viewed vapes as socially acceptable.
The ability to use nicotine pouches without smoke, vapor, or visible use may contribute to their growing appeal in public and social environments.
Nicotine Pouch Users Are Mainly Older Adults
Unlike some perceptions of newer nicotine products, the survey indicates that nicotine pouch users are generally older adults.
Research found:
- The average age of first use was 33;
- Only 3% of respondents started using nicotine pouches before age 18.
The results suggest that nicotine pouches are mainly attracting adult nicotine consumers rather than younger users.
Their discreet format and lower visibility may make them particularly appealing to consumers looking for alternatives to traditional nicotine products.
Nicotine Pouches May Become a Key Alternative in a Changing UK Market
The rapid growth of nicotine pouches reflects broader changes in the UK nicotine market.
As the government continues implementing stricter vape regulations and expanding smoke-free policies, consumers may increasingly consider alternative nicotine products.
For nicotine companies, the changing market creates new opportunities but also increases the importance of:
- Product compliance;
- Responsible marketing;
- Adult consumer targeting;
- Regulatory awareness.
Markus Lindblad, director at Haypp, said the findings suggest that many consumers are turning to nicotine pouches as part of their efforts to quit smoking or move away from vaping.
The continued growth of nicotine pouches indicates that the UK nicotine market is undergoing a significant shift, with consumers increasingly evaluating products based on convenience, social acceptance, and regulatory changes.
