UK: New rechargeable vape may circumvent disposable vaping ban

New rechargeable vape may circumvent disposable vaping ban

In June 2025, the United Kingdom plans to ban the sale of single-use vapes. Experts warn that these rechargeable vape brands, which are often marketed as disposable vapes, could bypass the ban, creating “environmental challenges” similar to disposable devices.

British experts warn

According to the Daily Mail on October 24, experts have warned that new rechargeable vapes could avoid the ban on single-use vapes.

On October 24, the British government announced that England would declare a ban on the sale of disposable vapes from June 1, 2025. But this month 22 Japan, the Welsh government website also announced that the same ban will come into effect in June 2025 the same month. So far, two of the four UK regions have issued specific declaration documents.

Such products are sold under the names “rechargeable”, “pod” or “Big Puff” and are almost as expensive as disposable vapes. Scott Butler, executive director of Materialialial, pointed out that while these vapes can be recharged and have a long lifespan, a large proportion have been marketed as disposable products. Now customers have become accustomed to the “lost” culture contained in disposable vapes, which may cause “environmental challenges” similar to disposable devices.

Currently, around 360 million single-use vapes are sold in the UK each year, many of which are carelessly discarded. Advocates say that’s because about 90 percent of retailers fail to meet their recycling responsibilities. In addition, in 2022, with the discarding of disposable vapes, more than 40 tons of lithium batteries were discarded, enough to power about 5,000 electric vehicles.

Health Minister Andrew Gwynne said: “We know that the majority of young people are opting for single-use vapes. It is forbidden to protect these vulnerable young people.”

Environment Minister Mary Creagh added that single-use vapes waste valuable resources and cause problems for cities, parks and cities.

A paper published by Cancer Research UK states that the ban on single-use vapes affects England. Wales and Scotland. 2.6 million adults.

The study’s lead author, Sarah Jackson from University College London (UCL), said,

  • “While banning single-use vapes may seem like a straightforward solution to reduce teen vaping, it could have serious unintended consequences for smokers.”
  • “If a ban is enacted, it will be important to encourage smokers and former smokers who use single-use vapes to use other types of vapes instead of returning to smoking again.”
