UK government urges businesses need to speed up stock disposal

The UK government is urging businesses to dispose of their disposable vape stock before the new legislation comes into force on June 1, 2025, to address environmental and public health risks. Businesses that fail to comply with the ban could face fines or have their products confiscated.

Core points to watch:

1. The UK government reminds stores that they need to dispose of their disposable Vapestock by June 1, 2025

2. The UK government is calling on retailers to cooperate, with non-compliant businesses facing fines or product confiscation.

Countdown to disposable vaping ban

Recently, the UK government’s official website posted that stores and convenience stores on major shopping streets are being urged to step up their efforts to dispose of disposable Vape stock before the new legislation comes into effect. This legislation will come into effect on June 1, 2025.

The UK government said that with less than two months until the ban comes into force, businesses must take action to ensure their stock complies with the legislation. Businesses will need to ensure that they have no stock of disposable Vapes after June 1, 2025; Otherwise, they will not be able to make sales and will need to dispose of these products safely.

Analysis by recycling organization Material Focus found that around 8.2 million Vapes are currently discarded or littered in the UK every week, which equates to 13 per second. However, recycling disposable Vapes is very difficult and workers in the waste industry need to take them apart by hand, a slow and expensive process. The contents of Vapes also pose a fire risk to recycling facilities and can leak harmful chemicals into the environment.

Ashley Dalton, the UK’s Minister for Public Health and Prevention, has warned that disposable Vapes are not just an environmental crisis, but a public health crisis, with disposable Vapes attracting many young people into addiction. The ban will strengthen the Tobacco and Electronic Cigarettes Act to comprehensively address youth Vape smoking. She called on retailers to plan accordingly and work with the government for a clean, green and healthy Britain for the future.

Any business in England that fails to comply with the ban could be subject to a stop notice or an initial fine of £200, with full product confiscation by Trading Standards. Any further breaches will face unlimited fines or prosecution.
