Tasmania Moves to Strengthen Enforcement on Illicit Tobacco and Vapes

According to a report by Retail World Magazine on March 25, 2026, Tasmania, Australia, is stepping up its crackdown on illicit tobacco and vaping products.

Public Health Amendment Bill Introduced to Parliament

Bridget Archer, Tasmania’s Minister for Health, Mental Health, and Wellbeing, introduced the Public Health Amendment (Prohibition of Tobacco and Other Products) Bill 2026 to Parliament on March 24.

New Offenses Target Illicit Vape Sales

Minister Archer stated that these new laws will send a clear message that Tasmania will not tolerate the illicit trade of tobacco products. This initiative forms part of the state’s ongoing commitment to reducing smoking rates and protecting young Tasmanians from harm.

Stronger Penalties for Illegal Tobacco and Vape Supply

She noted that these products undermine the government’s efforts to reduce smoking and nicotine addiction and are often marketed in ways deliberately designed to appeal to teenagers. The Bill proposes establishing new offenses for illicit vaping sales and significantly increasing penalties for illegal tobacco and vape supply.

Authorities to Gain Power to Shut Down Non-Compliant Businesses

According to the proposal, the bill will introduce robust enforcement measures, including granting authorities the power to shut down businesses engaged in the illicit sale of tobacco or e-cigarettes, or those operating outside the established licensing framework.

Ban on Vending Machine Sales and Retail Displays

The bill also proposes banning the sale of smoking products via vending machines and prohibiting retail stores from openly displaying smoking-related paraphernalia, ensuring such items remain out of sight, particularly from children and young people.

Concerns Over Crime and Public Safety Risks

Felix Ellis, Tasmania’s Minister for Police, Fire, and Emergency Management, emphasized the need to prevent arson attacks and intimidation tactics seen in other parts of Australia from spreading to Tasmania.

Illicit Tobacco Linked to Organized Crime

He noted that illicit tobacco is fueling organized crime across Australia, and that stronger enforcement will send a clear signal that such activities will not be tolerated.

Call for Coordinated National Response

Ellis added that while Tasmania is actively cracking down on illicit tobacco and e-cigarette sales, the issue requires a coordinated national response to improve public health outcomes and strengthen community safety.
