Swiss canton to ban disposable vapes, sparking political debate

A Swiss cantonal has passed a ban on the sale of single-use vapes or become the first in the country to implement such a ban, and the Swiss Confederation is also discussing a nationwide ban.

According to Blick, the Canton of Basel in Switzerland will ban the sale of disposable vapes on November 21.

On Wednesday night (20th), the Grand Council passed the Evangelical People’s Party with 45 abstentions, 35 votes, and 11 votes. (EVP) to make relevant motions and submit a preliminary report to the Government.

The Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), the Liberal Party (FDP), and the Swiss People’s Party (SVP) opposed submitting the motion to the government. SVP MP Joel Thuring said, “The sales ban should be discussed at the national level and not at the national level”.

The government is also against this. Health Director Lukas Engelberger noted that there is very limited room for regulations at the state level.

Councillor Christoph Hochuli pointed out that in addition to health risks, disposable vapes also pose serious environmental problems. The centrist /EVP. Green Liberal Party (GLP), and GAB together supported the motion, and there were different views within the Socialist Party (SP).

Back in early September, the Jura State parliament approved a motion for a total ban on single-use vapes. The Swiss Confederation is also discussing such a ban. In June of this year, the National Assembly of Christophe Krivaz passed the motion by 122 votes, with 63 votes (Christophe Clivaz) from the National Assembly of Vaud, and four abstentions.

Switzerland’s upper house will vote on the ban.
