Swiss ban on disposable vapes hits a snag: one canton refuses to enforce it

The Canton of Basel, Switzerland, has refused to implement a ban on single-use vapes, but it is sympathetic to the ban and follows the national debate.

According to Nau, on February 11, the municipal government of Basel, Switzerland, refused to implement a one-time electronic cigarette ban.

The state government argued that the motion to ban the sale of single-use vapes was unacceptable in violation of “higher law.” Still, state governments are sympathetic to the ban.

The Government proposes that the Grand Council consider the motion proposed by Christoph Hochuli (EVP) as a guide. The government largely welcomed the move to ban single-use vapes and said it would continue to monitor federal and other state developments.

A nationwide debate about vapes is underway in Switzerland. The Grand Council has already voted 45 to 35 in November 2024, with 11 abstentions, to send Hocooley’s motion to the government for a preliminary report.

In the cantons of Valais and Jura, parliaments have decided to ban the sale of single-use vapes, while discussions are also underway at the federal level. In June 2024, the National Assembly voted 122 to 63, with four abstentions, to accept a similar motion by Christophe Clivaz (Green Party), a member of the Vaud State Assembly.

Whether a nationwide ban will be imposed is still up in the air. Next, the Federal parliament will decide on the ban.
