Spain’s health minister announced that in order to deal with the health and environmental impacts, tobacco laws and regulations will be amended in the coming weeks, including banning the sale of disposable vapes and their flavorings and considering restrictions on flavored vapes.
El Mundo was recently reported by Javier Padilla, Spain’s secretary of State for public health. Javier Padilla announced that a proposal to amend Royal Law 579/2017 will be published in the coming weeks. The proposal would include a ban on single-use vapes and their flavorings.
The Spanish Minister of Health, Monica Garcia, introduced Padilla’s speech at an information session organized by the New Economic Forum in Madrid. Padilla said the purpose of the revision is to address the health hazards of disposable vapes and their environmental impact. In addition, the proposal also considers restrictions on flavored vapes and legislation to implement tobacco packaging and general packaging.
Padilla pointed out that in public health, there are three areas where reforms need to be strengthened: first, the Public Health Strategy Law approved in June 2022; Second, the establishment of a public health surveillance network recently approved by the Council of Ministers; Eventually, a consensus was reached for the establishment of the National Public Health Service.
- “We will now face the next step, which is to amend Royal Decree 579/2017 relating to the production, display, and sale of tobacco and its derivatives.”
- “By the first quarter of 2025, the Tobacco Law Reform No. 28 of 2005 will be enacted to provide for smoke-free Spaces. Once the text is published, we’ll see what’s specific for each space.”
