South Korea’s National Assembly failed to pass an amendment to the Tobacco Business Act, which would have included synthetic nicotine in tobacco regulation, due to a disagreement law.
On February 18, the Economy and Finance subcommittee of the National Assembly failed to review an amendment to the Tobacco Business Law that would include synthetic nicotine in tobacco regulation.
The Planning and Finance Committee of the National Assembly held a meeting of the Economic and Finance subcommittee on the same day (18). They deliberated on revising the Tobacco Business law, which is the core of the bill but failed to pass it. The amendment expands the concept of tobacco from the original “tobacco leaf” to “tobacco and nicotine”, and electronic cigarettes using synthetic nicotine are included in tobacco regulation.
Song Eon-seok, a member of the National Power Party and chairman of the Strategy and Finance Committee, said in a plenary meeting after the Economic and Finance subcommittee, “We discussed the Tobacco Business law in the Economic and Finance subcommittee today, but regrettably, the bill failed to pass due to some disagreements that could not be resolved. I urge all parties to consult quickly with the government so that a solution can be considered as soon as possible.”
