Dutch Watchdog Investigates Snapchat Over Minor Protection from Vape Sellers

Dutch Watchdog Probes Snapchat Over Vape Sales to Minors

The Netherlands’ ACM has opened an investigation into Snapchat for potentially failing to prevent its platform from being used to illegally sell vapes to minors, a possible breach of EU digital rules.

Key Points:

  • Reason: Snapchat may not be adequately protecting underage users from illegal vape sellers.
  • Regulation: The probe examines a potential breach of the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA).
  • Snap’s Response: The company says it prohibits vape ads and is investing in safety features.
  • Status: ACM is collaborating with the European Commission; no timeline for the investigation was given.

September 10th – According to Reuters, the Dutch consumer watchdog ACM has launched an investigation into Snapchat over concerns that the platform may not be adequately protecting minors from illegal vape sellers.

ACM stated there are indications that Snapchat is failing to prevent underage users from being exposed to vape sales, which would violate the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA). The act requires platforms to ensure sufficient protection for minors.

Snap Inc., Snapchat’s parent company, said it takes the matter seriously and will cooperate with the inquiry. The company highlighted its efforts to combat platform abuse, including prohibiting vape advertisements and blocking search results for illicit content.

ACM is collaborating with the European Commission on the investigation, but has not provided additional details or a timeline.
