The New York City Council in the United States is stepping up its efforts to crack down on illegal vape devices dressed up as school supplies. As recently reported by the NY Post.
Staten Island Democratic Councilmember Kamillah Hanks was executed Thursday (18) by Staten Island Democratic Councilmember. (Kamillah Hanks) introduced proposed legislation that would see vape salespeople wearing school supplies such as highlighters, pens, and pencils face fines of up to $1,000 for a first offense.
The fine would be up to $2,000 for a second offense within three years and up to $5,000 for a third offense. Repeat offenders would also risk having their business licenses revoked.
Hanks said the bill is designed to protect children’s health.
- “Vapes dressed up as school supplies are intentionally designed to deceive school safety personnel, parents, and officials. Which makes it difficult to enforce smoking bans in schools.”
- “This bill seeks to ban the sale of these deceptive goods in New York stores and online. By doing so. We will support the work of school safety personnel to keep harmful substances out of our schools and create a safer environment for our children.”
According to the state health department, 18.7 percent of high school students use vapes in 2022.
In May of this year. Assemblywoman Monica Martinez, a Long Island Democrat, passed State Sen. (Monica Martinez) While similar legislation was introduced. The Assembly did not support the measure to cover the entire state.
Under current law, it is illegal to sell flavored vapes.
