Iguassu Customs Seizes Thousands of Vapes Hidden in Truck
According to reports from Brazilian media outlets and government sources. Iguassu Customs officials seized approximately 4,600 vape products during a routine inspection on July 8.
The products, estimated to be worth around BRL 150,000 (approximately US$30,000). Were discovered hidden inside the false chassis of a truck with Paraguayan license plates at the International Friendship Bridge.
The truck driver reportedly fled to Paraguay after authorities discovered the illegal shipment. Customs officials transferred the seized vehicle and vape products to the local Federal Revenue and Customs Administration office for further investigation.
Brazil’s Federal Revenue Service stated that it will continue strengthening enforcement against cross-border vape smuggling to protect legal trade channels and public security. Authorities also encouraged citizens to report suspected illegal activities through official channels.
Piauí Police Arrest Suspected Vape Smuggler in Teresina
On July 9, the Civil Police of Piauí carried out a search operation in the southern district of Teresina and arrested a man identified as Emanuel, who was suspected of involvement in illegal vape distribution.
During the operation, police seized:
- Approximately 199 vape products;
- A payment card machine;
- Several mobile phones;
- A pickup truck allegedly used for transporting and selling illegal products.
The seized items and vehicle were estimated to be worth around BRL 200,000 (approximately US$40,000).
Police stated that the operation confirmed the existence of an illegal vape sales network in the region and that the products were being traded without regulatory authorization.
Sorriso Authorities Target Illegal Vape Sales Network
Also on July 9, police in Sorriso, Mato Grosso, seized more than 1,100 illegal vapes from an establishment suspected of operating an unauthorized sales network.
The seized products were valued at approximately BRL 600,000 (around US$120,000).
According to investigators, the business had developed a structured sales operation, generating approximately BRL 300,000 in monthly vape sales while allegedly failing to declare income and avoid paying taxes.
Authorities stated that the store sold vape products without approval from Brazil’s health regulator. The National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) did not adequately verify buyers’ ages.
Police alleged that the lack of age verification allowed illegal vape products to become accessible to young people and adolescents.
Brazil’s Vape Ban Drives Focus on Illegal Market Enforcement
Brazil has maintained strict restrictions on electronic cigarettes and vaping products, meaning unauthorized sales and distribution can result in legal consequences.
Authorities stated that illegal vape activities may involve multiple violations, including:
- Smuggling;
- Tax evasion;
- Unauthorized commercial activity;
- Public health violations.
Because vapes cannot legally be marketed through normal retail channels in Brazil, law enforcement agencies have increasingly focused on identifying import routes, storage locations, and domestic distribution networks.
Youth Access and Health Risks Highlighted by Authorities
Brazilian authorities emphasized that illegal vape sales create additional risks because products are often distributed without regulatory oversight or age verification.
Police warned that unregulated vape products may expose consumers to unknown ingredients and potential health risks. Including electronic cigarette or vaping-associated lung injury (EVALI).
Authorities particularly highlighted concerns regarding young people’s access to these products. Stating that illegal retailers may use attractive flavors, online sales channels, and informal distribution networks to reach minors.
Illegal Vape Trade Becomes a Growing Enforcement Priority in Brazil
The recent operations in Paraná, Piauí, and Mato Grosso demonstrate Brazil’s continued efforts to combat illegal vape distribution.
For enforcement agencies, the issue extends beyond product seizures and includes broader concerns involving organized smuggling networks, tax losses, unauthorized imports, and youth exposure.
As Brazil maintains its prohibition on vape sales, authorities are expected to continue targeting import routes, distributors, and retailers involved in the illegal vape market. For businesses operating in the nicotine industry, compliance with local regulations and monitoring of international supply chains remain critical factors in avoiding legal risks.
