According to the Minnesota Youth Cigarette Survey, at least 49.5% of students who smoked vapes in the past 30 days did so on about 20 days. Frequent e-cigarette smoking has increased by 165 percent since 2017 and 47 percent since 2020.

Students who smoke vapes show a trend of increased nicotine dependence, according to a survey released Tuesday (2) by the Minnesota Department of Health.
Dr. Brooke Cunningham, director of the Minnesota Department of Health, stated.
“Facing the health risks of nicotine dependence is very serious for our youth. Many teens may smoke cigarettes or vape e-cigarettes because they think it will help them relieve stress or anxiety, but the tar may exacerbate those feelings.”
According to survey data, 79.6 percent of students who vape e-cigarettes said they experience signs of nicotine dependence, such as an intolerable addiction to smoking and unconsciously reaching for an e-cigarette. At least 49.5 percent of students who smoked e-cigarettes in the past 30 days did so in about 20 days. Frequent e-cigarette smoking has increased by 165 percent since 2017 and 47 percent since 2020.
However, vape uptake among teens has declined dramatically since public health measures and vape restriction policies were implemented. In 2023, about 13.9 percent of high school students reported a significant decrease in e-cigarette smoking in the last 30 days since 19.3 percent in 2020, according to the data.
The Minnesota Department of Health wants to help teens who quit smoking.
