In order to provide guidance and promote health advisory services. Singapore’s Ministry of Health has stepped up inspections of non-smoking places and added vape logos and QR codes to the new no-smoking signs.
Malaysia’s Ministry of Health strengthens anti-smoking enforcement
Deputy Health Minister Datuk Dr. Norhayati Rusli said checks would be stepped up at places that regularly receive complaints about smoking in non-smoking establishments. The Star reported on Oct 22.
According to Nohayati, from Oct 1 to 21, 352 places were checked in Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya under the Public Health Smoking Products Control Act 2024 (Act 852). A total of 33 tickets were issued under Section 47 of the Act, with a cumulative fine of RM8,250 (US $1,900). Eighteen of the tickets involved restaurants, seven were issued to shopping centers and eight were issued to public parking areas.
The new logo adds a QR code for vapes and counseling
The vice minister further noted that vape logos and QR codes were added to the new no-smoking signs for the public to scan for more health consultation services. The number of complaints received determines “hot spot” locations, where inspectors will conduct more frequent inspections. She hopes the new logo will provide clearer guidance.
When asked about the reaction of local property owners, she acknowledged that all had used the new no-sign. They understood the importance of compliance and expressed their support and welcome for this implementation.
Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr. Dzulkefly Ahmad said at a press conference on Oct 4 that dry cleaners and government and private sector office buildings would be designated as no-smoking areas from Jan 1.
The implementation of the new bill will be divided into two phases: immediate enforcement and education enforcement. To limit their supply, especially to minors, immediately force the sale of some tobacco products in the form of games that appeal to children and adolescents. In addition, the bill prohibits the sale of tobacco products in educational institutions, marketplaces, online platforms, and vending machines, and promptly prohibits any advertising, promotion, and sponsorship activities for children and adolescents.
