New Zealand's new vape rules for Oct: removable batteries become mandatory

New Zealand’s Ministry of Health announced that from Oct 1, 2024, all vape devices must be equipped with removable batteries and child safety mechanisms, and violators will face heavy fines. The new rules also include specifications for packaging patterns and flavor names.

On Sep 24, the New Zealand Ministry of Health announced that all e-cigarette devices must be equipped with removable batteries and child safety mechanisms by Oct 1, 2024. After that, devices that do not meet these requirements will no longer be available for sale.

The change is part of measures the New Zealand government reiterated in March this year to crack down on youth vape use. The new rules also include a ban on the use of cartoon or toy images on packaging and limit flavor names to general descriptions.

The regulations were originally implemented on October 21, 2023, and only applied to disposable vape devices. From October 1, 2024, all e-cigarette devices (including reusable devices) must include removable batteries and child-safety mechanisms.

When the new rules come into effect, retailers, buyers, and manufacturers will not be able to sell or do not qualify for inventory. Retailers who continue to sell substandard products will face fines of up to 50,000 yuan (about $31,000) in New Zealand, and large businesses will face fines of up to 400,000 yuan (about $250,000) in New Zealand.
