Data from the Regulatory Activity (SZTFH) survey of Hungary by the Regulatory authorities show that traditional tobacco consumption continues to decline, while the heated tobacco product consumption continues to decline (HTP) market is expanding rapidly. At the same time, black market cigarette sales rose significantly in 2024, affecting official data.
According to the latest data from the Hungarian regulator (SZTFH), traditional tobacco consumption continues to decline, while the consumption of heated tobacco products continues to decline (HTP) is rapidly occupying the market, and this trend is expected to further strengthen by 2024.
While traditional tobacco consumption is still declining, the rate of decline has slowed slightly compared to previous years. Compared to the 1920s, the average monthly sales volume has dropped by 150 million to 200 million tobacco, which means that the annual sales volume has dropped significantly.
Consumer demand for finely cut cigarettes has also been greatly reduced. Compared to the 1920s, the monthly purchase volume is reduced by 20 to 30 tons, and this reduction can reach 80 to 100 tons.
In addition, black market cigarette sales in Hungary increased significantly in 2024, with the illegal cigarette trade masking official figures.
