To drastically reduce the amount of nicotine in tobacco products, the FDA has submitted a proposed rule, a review process that could take months, and the tobacco industry could Sue to prevent new regulations.
According to a December 11 report by CNN, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), to greatly reduce the nicotine content in tobacco products, the Biden administration submitted a proposed rule at the end of its term.
The FDA first hinted at a nicotine limit in 2018. FDA President Dr. Robert Califf received his doctorate in 2022. (Robert Califf) announced that the agency is working on a rule that would require tobacco companies to reduce the amount of nicotine in tobacco.
On Tuesday, the FDA submitted it to the Office of Management and Budget. “To reduce the laziness of tobacco and other burning cigarette products, establishing the maximum nicotine content standard will be one of the most impactful actions in the history of cigarette product control in the United States,” the FDA informed CNN on Wednesday.
Harold Wimmer, CEO of the American Lung Association, praised the move,
- “Once this rule is finalized, it could change efforts to eliminate cigarette use in our country.” Making tobacco products non-addictive greatly reduces the number of young people who become addicted. In addition, it is crucial to reduce the nicotine content of all commercial cigarette products, including vapes.”
Dr. Rose Marie Robertson. Deputy chief scientific and medical officer at the Heart Association pointed out that even with limited nicotine, not all smokers will quit.
CNN noted that the audit process can take months, and the tobacco industry routinely sues the government to block new laws and regulations.
