A member of parliament from Tucuman Province, Argentina, criticized the government for not implementing the e-cigarette ban and called on the government to take action to safeguard public health and fulfill its commitment to the people.
Key points:
- E-cigarettes have long been included in the ban: As early as 2019, the Tucuman Province of Argentina passed a law amendment to incorporate e-cigarettes into Law No. 7575, prohibiting their use in confined Spaces.
- The government has failed to enforce existing laws: Despite the clear regulations, the provincial government has yet to effectively enforce them. Lawmakers have criticized it for “setting an example but taking no action.”
- Members of parliament called for enhanced enforcement: Two members of parliament called on the government to effectively implement existing regulations to prevent laws from becoming “forgotten paper documents”.
E-cigarette ban needs to be strictly enforced, Argentine lawmakers urge
According to Lagaceta on April 28. Argentine councillors Jose Maria Canelada and Gustavo Cobos of Tucuman Province reaffirmed that e-cigarettes were officially incorporated into Law No. 7575 nearly six years ago. And it is prohibited to use them in a closed space.
The two lawmakers emphasized that the regulation was not newly added recently but was approved by the parliament on October 8, 2019, and was officially notified to the executive branch the next day. The amendment states that e-cigarettes are a type of device powered by batteries and containing nicotine, flavorings and other chemicals.
Da and Ecovacs said in a public statement that the problem is not the absence of the law, but the failure of the provincial government to enforce the existing regulations. They further questioned the attitude of the provincial government towards the implementation of regulations and criticized it for repeatedly ignoring the provisions passed by the legislative body.
- It’s unbelievable that we need to ask the highest authority in the province to abide by the law, and they should have set an example. Members of parliament said that this was not the first time such a situation had occurred.
Finally, they called on the government to take practical actions to safeguard public health.
- We once again urge the government to fulfill its commitment to the people of Tucuman and not to let the regulations passed by the representatives of public opinion become mere paper documents left on the government’s desk.
