A university in Singapore has installed smoke detectors to prevent vapes from smoking in bathrooms.
According to The Varsitarian on November 17, the Singapore University of Science and Technology is stepping up its monitoring of vape use in bathrooms on campus.
Francis de Jesus, assistant dean of the business school, told Varsitarian that the college installed four detectors on the third and fourth floors after receiving many complaints from students and parents about vaping in the bathrooms.
He mentioned that their office has been receiving complaints from students and parents about some students vaping in the bathroom. Currently, the college is dealing with several incidents of vaping in bathrooms.
The detector emits an alarm when it detects smoke, which is also an extra precaution to prevent fire. In 2015, there was a major fire on the floor, and vapes have also been reported to pose a risk of explosion and fire.
In addition, some warning signs have been posted on the bathroom wall, prohibiting vaping use. “Warning: Vaping is strictly prohibited, and violators will be subject to strict Student Conduct Discipline (SWDB),” the slogan reads.
Under the rules, students who vape or smoke in the bathroom will face penalties ranging from warnings to suspensions, depending on the severity and frequency of the behavior. The assistant dean of the Business School said the college has applied to the Facilities Management Office for additional detectors to enhance oversight.
