According to a report by the Danish Ministry of Health, the use of vapes rose to 12% between 2022 and 2024, with about 136,000 young people aged 15 to 29 using e-cigarettes. The health minister said a new prevention program would be introduced to counter the trend.
Key points:
- The Danish National Institute of Public Health reports that the use of vapes among young people aged 15 to 29 increased from 7% to 12% between 2022 and 2024, with about 136,000 people using vaping.
- The Danish government has implemented several measures to stop illegal e-cigarette sales, but the effect is not yet obvious.
- The health minister said the government will introduce a new prevention program to further curb the rise in the use of e-cigarettes.
According to DR Reported on February 27, a report on smoking habits in Denmark prepared by the Danish National Institute of Public Health for the Danish Health Authority shows that about 136,000 young people between the ages of 15 and 29 used vapes in 2022 and 2024. E-cigarette use rose from 7 percent to 12 percent.
Health Minister Sophie Løhde expressed concern but also noted that the government has begun to take measures to combat the problem. For example, since 2022, only tobacco and menthol-flavored e-cigarettes have been legally sold, and other flavored e-cigarettes have been banned. However, the data shows that the number of young people using fruit-flavored vapes grew by nearly 46,000 between 2022 and 2024.
In response, Denmark has launched a new prevention program. Sophie Løhde acknowledges that some of the precautions have only just taken effect and are therefore not yet reflected in the latest study data. That may mean the government needs to do more to reverse the trend, she added.
