Czech Republic to ban flavored vapes Health Ministry seeks compromise from all sides

The Czech Republic’s Ministry of Health plans to issue a regulation banning all vape smells except tobacco, prompting a backlash from experts, manufacturers and users. After considering the views of all parties, the Ministry of Health can adjust the proposal to find a compromise plan.

According to Brnenska.Drbna, the Ministry of Health of the Czech Republic plans to issue a major regulatory measure that could have far-reaching implications for the vape market in the country. The regulation aims to ban all vape flavors except tobacco. The recommendation drew strong criticism from experts, manufacturers and vape customers.

In remarks to reporters, Health Minister Vlastimil Valek said:

  • “We will have a discussion and based on that come up with a plan that goes directly to the committee and is not understood.” I’m very worried about the results of defining the flavor list.”

Experts warn that banning flavors could lead some users to return to traditional tobacco due to limited options.

Vape manufacturers and users have also expressed their concern that the measure could lead to customer loss and market disruption. Manufacturers say few people are buying unflavored vapes, which could effectively end their business in this area.

Jind R Vobo R il, a former national anti-drug coordinator, criticized the planned ban, saying vapes are a low-risk alternative to regular tobacco and that many smokers are also turning to vapes for a variety of flavors. At issue is which flavors should be restricted. The head of the lower house committee, Zdenka Nemeichokova Crkvenjak, suggested monitoring only the taste of candy bars, but the health minister admitted that the specific definition of these tastes could be very complicated.

Kirkwenesh explained:

  • “We have an agreement to focus on flavors that are most appealing to teens, but it’s unlikely that flavors will be banned altogether.”

Following public pressure and expert advice, the Ministry of Health is considering revising the original recommendation. At the last meeting between the health minister and the coalition parties, the Department of Health decided to find a compromise plan, taking into account the views of all parties. The Ministry of Health continues to listen to all views and remains open-minded. Meanwhile, vape makers are proposing self-policing measures, including severe penalties for selling to minors and reducing the appeal of packaged flavors.

A final decision on whether to ban the flavors altogether or modify the original proposal will be made in the coming weeks.
