Lawmakers have proposed that California ban the sale or distribution of new and refurbished single-use vapes from January 1, 2026, with fines ranging from $500 to $2,000 for violators.
According to ABC News on February 20, California may ban the sale of single-use electronic cigarettes to reduce plastic pollution in the state.
California could become the first state to enact such a rule after similar attempts there and in New York were unsuccessful. Councillor Jacqui Irwin, who drafted the bill, said it would help prevent battery acid produced by single-use vapes from seeping into land and sewers.
Under the proposal, California would ban the sale or distribution of new or refurbished single-use vapes starting Jan. 1, 2026, and the proposal would also allow local or state governments to fine first-time violators $500, second fines $1,000, and subsequent violations $2,000.
