British American Tobacco Mexico is concerned about the decision by the Mexican House of Representatives to approve a constitutional ban on vapes, warning that it could have adverse effects on public health, the economy, and the law, and calling for modest controls based on scientific evidence rather than bans.
According to La Querella Digital on December 4. BAT Mexico reported that it is concerned about the decision of the Mexican House of Representatives to approve a constitutional ban on vapes.
BAT Mexico warned that such a move could have adverse effects on public health, the economy, and the law.
The company noted that the proposal ignores scientific evidence and international experience showing that vapes are as low as 95 percent harmful compared to traditional tobacco. The UK, New Zealand, and Sweden have already incorporated vapes into their social policies to tackle smoking and have made significant progress.
British American Tobacco Mexico warned that the ban could lead to tax evasion, an expanding black market, increased risk of minors accessing unregulated goods, and limited access by adults to low-risk alternatives. According to the company, a similar ban in Mexico has made the illegal trade even more rampant.
The company reiterated its commitment to promoting health and the environment through its global strategy “A Better Tomorrow”, which aims to reduce the impact of smoking through the Vuse vape brand line, which has been legally sold in Mexico since 2019.
BAT Mexico calls on senators to vote based on scientific evidence, not ideological bias, and to prioritize the appropriate regulatory framework. They emphasize controls, not bans, as the most effective way to protect public health and responsibly curb smoking.
- “Bans have proven to be an ineffective and expensive solution. Only through data-based monitoring can we move towards a ‘smoke-free Mexico.'”
