Wales Confirms Ban on Disposable Vapes to Combat Plastic Pollution
The Welsh Government has announced that the use of disposable vapes will be banned starting June 2025, as part of broader efforts to tackle plastic waste and reduce environmental harm. The move aligns with similar actions across the United Kingdom to ensure consistent enforcement nationwide.
Official Announcement and Purpose of the Ban
According to a written statement published on the official Welsh Government website on October 22, the decision aims to reduce plastic pollution and mitigate the environmental impact of single-use vape products.
Huw Irranca-Davies, Deputy Minister for Climate Change and Rural Affairs and Cabinet Secretary for Wales, confirmed that the Environmental Protection (Single-Use Vape) Regulations 2024 will take effect next year.
- “Introducing these regulations will be another key step in tackling the problem of waste and plastic pollution,” the Deputy Minister stated.

The proposed ban was first introduced in April 2024 and underwent public consultation and stakeholder feedback before being finalized.
The Welsh Government emphasized its collaboration with the UK Government, as well as the Scottish and Northern Irish authorities, to ensure a coordinated UK-wide approach that promotes consistency and compliance.
Implementation Date and UK-Wide Coordination
The Deputy Minister announced that the ban will officially come into effect on June 1, 2025, aligning with the unified timeline across the UK.

Context: Scotland’s Earlier Implementation
In a related move, the Scottish Government previously confirmed that its ban on single-use vapes will take effect on April 1, 2025, making it the first UK nation to implement the measure.
