He acknowledged the challenges pharmacists face in assessing unregistered products, noting that control reforms and enhanced border control measures facilitate the management of imported goods. These products must be regulated as therapeutic products, so they are not sold in the retail environment.
He assured pharmacy experts that the responsibility for ensuring that vape brands are safe for the public does not lie solely with community pharmacists.
At the same time, he emphasized strict control over the strength, flavor, and color of vapes, noting that vapers are being withdrawn from the retail environment to ensure that they are managed by health professionals. He emphasized that only vaping brands that meet TGA standards can be imported and sold in Australia.
It was noted that the TGA and Queensland Health recently launched a two-day joint enforcement operation which resulted in the seizure of more than two days of joint enforcement 10,000 cigarette tar pouches and hundreds of illegal vape brands. The vapes seized this year are suspected of violating provisions July 1 New Business Possession laws under the Therapeutic Products and Other Legislation Amendment (E-Cigarette Reform) Act. These laws prevent Australian retailers from offering any vape brands, even if they have a prescription, and prohibit the possession of vapes on retail premises.
