The Argentine government announced the implementation of a new tobacco tax policy that has led to a general increase in domestic tobacco prices of between 5 and 20 percent. The new policy, effective July 13, imposes an additional emergency tax of 7% on each pack of tobacco.
LA ARENA reported on July 17 that the increased tobacco tax policy, which went into effect over the weekend, has led to a general increase in the price of tobacco across all brands, with increases ranging from 5% to 20%. The exact increase depends on the brand and package specifications. This price fluctuation involves many well-known brands such as Marlboro, Philip Morris, Chesterfield, and Harmony.
Following the approval of the Basic Law, the Argentine Official Gazette adopted General Decision No. 5524/2024, which officially announced the tax increase and the start of the so-called “Internal and Additional Emergency Tax on Tobacco”. The tax change came into effect last Saturday, the 13th. According to the new policy, the additional emergency tax on tobacco sales is based on a 7% tax rate on the final retail price of each pack of tobacco in the country, without any deduction.
Specific to the price increase for each brand, the prices for New Marlboro are as follows:
Red Box priced at $3.620, Red KS priced at $3.190, Red Box priced at $2.170, Blue Coral Purple XL boxed at $3.470, and Vista Limited Edition boxed at $3.470;
Prices for the Philip Morris brand have been adjusted to $3.010 for the boxed set, $2.660 for the KS 20 Box $1.790 for the 12 Box, $3.040 for the 20 Box Blue Spinning Box, and $1.820 for the 12 Box Blue Spinning Box.
